‘Camp Maple Leaf presents An Evening with General Rick Hillier’ launched ‘Operation Camp Maple Leaf’, our campaign to raise the needed funds to update existing facilities and establish a new family camp for our Military Families who’s loved ones are returning from overseas military operations.
It was a memorable evening with hosts Jason Farr and Mike Nabuurs from Talk 820 FM, a moving national anthem sung by renown Canadian tenor Michael Burgess, and an inspirational speech by General Rick Hillier (Ret’d) that made attendees proud to be Canadian and even more committed to building a new family camp.
The event was made possible through the support and the generosity of volunteers and our many contributors. We’d like to offer a special thank you to the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni, Astral Media, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s Team Up Foundation, Arbor Memorial, Haber Blain Insurance Brokers and the Canadian Council of War Veterans.
Our vision
To create a social-recreational environment and a sense of community on the island that supports military families. It is built on the premise that behind every soldier, there’s a family. Camp Maple Leaf will provide an atmosphere of respite, relaxation, and comfort on the island for both the soldiers returning from active duty and their families.
Our goal
To have a fully functioning camp supporting 120 military families a year.
To achieve this vision, we will build/rehabilitate:
Welcome Centre
A 2,800 square foot building that marks the “front door” of Camp Maple Leaf acting as the arrival/reception area for all visitors, our medical and administrative areas of the Camp.
Children’s Cabins
There are 10 cabins on the island dating back to the 1960s in need of structural rehabilitation/ replacement to permit continued use as accommod
ations for the campers.
Veteran’s Lodge and
Mechanical Systems
Rehabilitation of our main dining hall (originally built in 1904 and one of the original buildings) and upgrade of the Camp’s mechanical (sanitary and water) systems.
Family Camp/Respite Centre
Establish a Respite Centre for those returning from deployment, and a Family Camp of 50 initial cabins for use by Military families.
